I've heard the term risk marker used in relation to kidney cancer. What is it?

When a person has a change (a mutation or alteration) in specific genes, they are at a higher risk for developing cancer. The presence of such a change is sometimes called a risk marker. Testing for risk markers can help a doctor determine a person’s chance of developing a certain cancer.
